The hidden wonder of central Uganda: Lake Nabugabo

Lake Nabugabo is a well hidden wonder in central Uganda, close to the town of Masaka. This part of Lake Victoria was separated about 5000 years ago due to sand dunes that formed in strong winds; it is now 4 kilometres away from the mother lake. Nabugabo has sand beaches, is safe for swimming and has been declared a protected Ramsar wetland.

  • Day 1: Entebbe – Nabugabo

We will catch a morning ferry towards Mpigi, taking less than 30 minutes and saving us a lot of time on busy roads. Our first stop will be the Mpigi Royal Drum Makers who have been making ceremonial instruments for generations.

The next attraction are the equator circles. Having a photo taken inside of them is pretty customary and seeing the equator water experiment perhaps a little mind-blowing. Did you know that water drains differently there? Good coffee on the equator will be an extra bonus.

We will go for some tasty international lunch in Masaka and then proceed towards Lake Nabugabo. There are three nice resorts located on its shores, only a couple of minutes away from each other, and a walk around them will provide us with a pleasant evening activity, including a check on the fishermen’s base. Perhaps we should buy a fish to eat it for dinner?
